Sun
Safety Tips:
Any Vacation, be it to the beach, the ski hill, or any where in between, should be a sun-safe Vacation. Parents have a
responsibility to teach Children to enjoy every family outing as a sun-safe experience.
While Children are at the greatest risk of harm from UV radiation because their skin is thinner and more sensitive, (80% of
sun exposure over a lifetime occurs before 18 years of Age) and just one or two serious sunburns as a child double the risk
of skin cancer, all family members need to practice sun safety. As parents we need to teach our children how to practice sun
safety by example as well as by education.
Sun Safety needs to be practiced year round - any Time outdoors, Spring, Summer, Fall or Winter is Sun Safety Time. UV rays
are more intense in higher altitudes (as when skiing) or tropical climates (that southern vacation). UV rays can penetrate
clouds. Seeking shade does reduce the risk of direct exposure but does not protect you completely from sun damage as water,
snow, sand and other factors can reflect the sun's UV rays to someone sitting in the shade. Sun Safety means using all sun safe tips together for maximum protection from the Sun's harmful UV rays.
Babies under one year of age or anyone using medication should stay out of direct sunlight. See Tips from the Canadian
Cancer Society about Shade from the Sun, Protecting Children from the Sun and Sunscreen Use. If you have any questions -
check with your doctor. It is recommended that sunscreen not be used on babies under six months of age. Look for strollers that have a canopy and watch babies feet are covered. Make sure when baby is sleeping they have complete
coverage from the sun. Protect or limit sun exposure between 10am and 4 pm, when the UV rays are strongest - Use and teach children to use their
shadow as a guide - NO SHADOW - SEEK SHADE
Ensure children wear wide-brimmed hats (although any hat is better than none at all - baseball caps worn brim forward at
least offer some protection to the face and eyes) or a handkerchief can be tucked under the back and side of hat to cover
neck and ears.
Sunglasses that afford 100% UV protection (make sure that all family members have sunglasses with this on the label), will
protect the eyes from the sun's constant danger to eyes. UV rays can cause serious damage to your eyes - wear them whenever
possible outdoors.
Watch for dehydration and sunstroke in children - have them drink plenty of fluids during the day.

Makena
Surf is
a luxurious secluded beachfront condominium located in exclusive
Makena Resort. This gated community was developed with six 2
& 3 story buildings each offering sweeping views of the
Pacific. The pristine and picturesque beach and rocky shoreline
fronting the property is exceptional for sunsets, swimming,
sunning and spectacular seasonal whale watching. Makena Surf
offers central air conditioning, two large pool areas with
Jacuzzis, private gas barbeque areas, four tennis courts and
free on site parking. The interiors include large fully equipped
kitchens, wet bar, washers & dryers, cable television, free
local phone service, private lanais and luxury linens. Daily
maid service is included at this resort property.
This place was just wonderful. Every condo has such a beautiful view. We fell asleep to the sound of the ocean
every night. The sunsets are indeed some of the best I have ever seen in my life. We saw whales jumping every day right from our lanai. Our condo was very clean and stocked with everything you need, especially in the kitchen. There is laundry facilities there, too. There is a fish market and supermarket just a 2 minute drive away. We grilled fish or steak every night on the BBQ grills that are on the property. It is very easy to make friends with your neighbors. The rental staff is awesome and will help you with whatever you need. I have traveled to Europe, South America, the Bahamas and all across the mainland. This was one of the best places I ever stayed. I really enjoyed staying in a condo vs. hotel.

Dare to Understand Travel Terms, Then Sit Back and Enjoy Traveling
When planning your travels, you
have probably come across definitions and terms that might have
seemed strange to you. Check out Great West Cabins Travel Dictionary.
MAUI:
Ah, the magic of Maui… is it any wonder that the humpback whales choose Maui as part of their annual migratory route?
EXPLORE MAUI:
With white sand beaches and crystal clear waters, Maui is ideal for sunbathing, snorkeling and snoozing! But once you’ve
gotten enough sun, Maui’s also a great place for shopping and sightseeing. The old whaling town of Lahaina is home to many quaint shops and eclectic art galleries. On the opposite side of the island, the long road to Hana will lead you to the waterfall fed pools at Oheo Gulch, a perfect place to stretch your legs and take in the view. After touring the island, you may need to unwind in Wailea with a pampering spa treatment. It’s no wonder visitors return here year after year.
ABOUT MAUI - FACTS:
Facts: Population 117,644, Area 727 sq. miles
The "Magic Isle" produces sugar, pineapple, cattle and horses. The 10,023-foot Haleakala is the largest dormant volcano crater in the world. Lahaina was Hawaii's capital before 1845, and still has some of the atmosphere of an old whaling town. Nearby are the Kaanapali and Wailea resort areas and golf courses. Hana and Iao Valley draw many visitors.

Makena
Beach: Traveler Reviews
We discovered Makena Beach on our last day in Maui. We have never had so much fun!! The sun, the beautiful golden sand, Molokini crater off in the distance. The water was absolutely wonderful, and the waves were incredible! We have never had more fun jumping through waves than we did that day! The people are friendly. There was plenty of room for our family to enjoy the beach and water without big crowds. Makena is, by far, the most fun, yet relaxing, and beautiful beach we've ever been to.
Newark, DE
Makena Beach was by far my favorite beach on Maui. After driving the coast to visit many of the other beaches on my first day, I chose to go to Makena every day. It was a wide beach with few other people, making it a very peaceful place to relax.
Dallas, TX
While in Makena Beach we stopped at the roadside bbq grill. This was the best meal we had on the entire island and at the best price too. We enjoyed Fresh Kiawe smoked mahimahi with roasted sweet potato and fresh island fruits, some which had grown right on property and were tree
ripened... excellent! There are about 4 roadside stands in Makena but we recommend the one with the green picnic tables in front of the big house with the huge provided parking.
ALOHA and ENJOY! California
