Golf:
- An
18 hole, C.P.G.A., Arnold Palmer designed,
championship course is available at the 108 Mile,
just a 20 minute drive away from the cabins. Starting on the first
tee, golfers embark on 6800 yards of evergreen and deciduous bordered
fairways, featuring an interesting variety of holes, and picturesque
vistas. A driving range, practice green, lessons, power carts, pull
carts, clubs and accessories are available through the Pro Shop.
- There is
also a lovely nine hole golf course in 100 Mile House. The shorter
fairways are challengingly narrow, demanding finesse and good judgment.
The club house features a restaurant with patio and a pub, a fully
appointed Pro Shop, a driving net, and a fun mini-putt. So, come to
tee, and play a round in the South Caribou!
- The city
of Williams Lake, about 45 mins north, also boasts a fine 18 hole
course as well as a fun chip & putt course!
Skiing:
The snow-covered
hills and forests of the South Cariboo provide the ideal landscape for a
myriad of winter activities. Here you can take a cutter ride down a quiet
country lane, hire your own dog team to explore snow-laden trails, take a
snowmobile to the top of the world, have a skate on a frozen pond or
participate in an energetic shinny match. Heli-skiers
and snow-boarders head up to the powder - or if that is a little too daring,
there are some gentler, family-oriented ski hills. One can strap on some
snowshoes to follow the tracks of the region's bountiful wildlife, sit
meditatively with fishing pole by a hole in the ice or ride a horse through
the snow powdered plains over-looking the Fraser Canyon. Gear can be rented
for most winter activities - inquire at the Info Centre.
Downhill
Skiing - Downhill skiing can be enjoyed at Mount Timothy, 45
minutes north of 100 Mile House and 23 kilometres east of Lac La Hache.
Boasting terrific powder skiing, small crowds, and diverse terrain, Mount
Timothy is a welcoming, fun-filled ski area that attracts avid skiers and
boarders alike. Explore 27 runs with everything from slow cruisers,
exceptionally groomed runs, and steep powder filled basins. Enjoy 3 new
terrain parks and when you need a rest - relax in the day lodge.
There is also
a ski-and-snowboard play park at 108 Mile. This family-oriented hill offers
three runs, night lights, a handle tow, ski rental and lessons; a great
place to learn to ski. It's halfpipe is a favorite amongst the snowboarders,
and a new tube run offers an exciting alternative.
Cross
Country Skiing - The Cariboo Marathon, held the first weekend of
February, is one of the biggest races of its kind in Canada, drawing skiers
from across the Province and around the world to the South Cariboo every
winter.
Snowmobiling
- The trail network in the South Cariboo includes the Marble Range, the
Interlakes, Green Lake, Horse Lake, the Begbie Summit Trail, the Helena
Trail, Windy Mountain, and Mahood Lake. Snowmobilers can opt to explore the
endless trails west to the Fraser River, head east to Spanish Mountain and
the alpine meadows that border Wells Gray Park, or trek to nearby Big
Timothy, which offers a pleasant days outing for snowmobilers of all
abilities.
Dog
Sledding - There are Cariboo dog sled outfits that will take you on
a short tour, or allow you to mush your own team of huskies on longer
adventures, allowing access to some remote and beautiful winter spots; Moose
Valley Provincial Park, Lang Lake and Spout Lake. A winter event not to miss
is The Jack Gawthorn Memorial Dog Sled Race, held in January at 108 Mile
Ranch.
Things to do/see:
-
Fishing - If you feel best with rod
and reel in hand, the South Caribou features some of BC's best
fresh-water sport fishing. Typical catch in Lac La Hache lake is
Rainbow, Lake, and Kokanee trout. Other lakes close by include Timothy
Lake, Sprout Lake, Rail Lake, and Helena Lake. In the winter, ice
fishing is a popular activity with various derbies and social gatherings
geared to enhance your enjoyment throughout the season. Gold was the
passion that first brought people here. Now fishing is the religion that
brings visitors back, time-and-time again.
-
Power
Boat Fun - Boat and Jet Ski rentals are
available close by for the recreational water sport enthusiast, with a
number of boat launches at various points on the lake.
-
Trails
& Horseback Riding - Whether you are a total greenhorn, or miles in
the saddle have made your backside as tough as leather, Caribou Country has
the perfect place and the ideal horse for you. The choices, it seems, are as
endless as the trails. Guests can saddle up and enjoy a trail ride; wrangle
strays on an authentic cattle drive; go on a wilderness pack trip; or attend
an exciting, small town rodeo. No matter which riding adventure you choose,
old fashioned western hospitality and a great time are guaranteed. So pull
on those blue jeans, pull your hat down tight, tie that colorful bandanna
around your neck and step into those unblemished cowboy boots - it's time
they were initiated!
Hiking, Biking, ATV's -
The Deception, Mahood and Canim Falls hikes near Canim Lake will take you to
some spectacular cascades, while the Sepa Lake, 108 Lake, Succour Lake, and
Walker Valley trails provide access to some picturesque rolling terrain at 108
Mile. These are just a few of the trails available in the South Cariboo - and
if you don't want to use your feet, you can also access most of the trails by
bike, horse, or, in the winter, by cross country skis. Climb on an ATV or
4-wheeler and tour around some of our pristine back country. On one of these
machines, you have the opportunity to see some parts of the South Cariboo you
would not otherwise be able to visit.
Bird Watching - Birders
can visit the 100 Mile Marsh behind the South Caribou Visitor Info Centre,
paddle Moose Valley Provincial Park, or hike through 108 Mile's Walker Valley.
Bald eagles and red-tail hawks frequent the North shore of Canim Lake. Drop-in
or call the Visitor Info Centre (located on Hwy 97, 100 Mile House) and they
will point you in the right direction for the best bird-viewing.
Spa Treatments - For
those wanting to pamper themselves there is the Hills Health Spa, just a 20
minute drive from the cabins, offering a wide range of treatments and
facilities.
Art
shows and craft fairs, concerts, festivals and theatre productions - all
are very much a part of the South Cariboo. Pay a visit to some unique and
interesting galleries and craft shops; you may come away with a distinctive
Cariboo treasure. If you love First Nation's art and traditional crafts, then
visit the Canim Lake Band Cultural Centre.
