Things
to do/see:
- Sample the cheeses at Bluffton cheese
factory. Bluffton is a few miles north of Rimbey, and the cheese factory
is a couple of miles east of there. Watch for signs, or asks the locals
for directions.
- See old cars, machinery, and lifestyle
habits at the Reynolds Alberta museum just west of Wetaskiwin.
- A huge array of lamps and lanterns
is on display at the museum in Donalda. Everything from large
miners lamps, to the mainstays of the old farm life, to the fanciest
petite lamps for the boudoirs of some classy lady.
- International Harvester Co. used to
make a line of trucks. The International Truck Museum in Rimbey
has many of these on display.
- There are open pit coal mining operations
and some tours available at the Forestburg Collieries north of Halkirk.
- South of Sylvan Lake is the old Icelandic
settlement of Markerville. The town is well kept, but the streets
are all curved and winding, just like they must have been in Iceland
in 1895. There is an old creamery on display for visitors on weekends
in the summer, and just west of town is the old historic Stephensen
House. Mr. Stephensen was a remarkable man who was one of the
early founders in the Markerville community.
- For a longer jaunt, try a trip to
the historic location of three forts erected at different times S.W.
adjacent to Rocky Mountain House. This was home base for many
of the survey trips of David Thompson. Evidence of the three fort
locations still remain. There is an interpretive centre with
displays of Native and Fur Trader lifestyle items.
- For the engineering buffs, there are
dams to be seen. (Dickson on the Red Deer River, and Brazeau to the
north-west. Abraham Lake is also man-made. It's west of Nordegg on
the David Thompson Highway
- Tour: The Stettler (Alberta Prairie
Railway Excursions) Steam Train ride is an all day affair (starting
at about noon or so, until about dark). There is on board entertainment,
the odd gangster holdup, and a community supper meal on some trips.
In 2000 the fare varied between $29.00 for kids and $60 for each adult,
depending on the particular tour and amenities. You need to call ahead
and reserve, especially for summer weekend days. Try phoning 403.742.2811
or www.nucleus.com/heartland
- Tour: Novacor has a giant petrochemical
plant at Joffre, and they are proud to show off. Call ahead
for arrangements (342-8611).
- FARMERS MARKETS:
A). Red Deer has a big Farmers Market on
Saturday mornings at the south east corner of the downtown
area near the Sportsplex and east of the Lodge Motor Inn.
B). Bentley also has an entertaining little
Farmers Market on Saturday afternoons from 1:30 -3:30 in the rink.
- Beach activity:
There is a safe kid's beach down the path behind the cottage.
You can also drive to a large beach at the south end of Gull Lake,
at Aspen Beach Provincial Park. The Brewer campground has the nicest
beach.
At Sylvan Lake there is a park with a large waterslide. Ticket prices
drop a little after 3:00 PM or so.
- Tour
The Royal Tyrell Museum at Drumheller and see world class displays
of dinosaurs, trilobites, etc.
- Pick Berries. There are wild
raspberries, saskatoons, and choke cherries, each with their own season.
